AGM and Lecture: What does it mean to be a socialist lawyer?

Members of the public and of the Society are invited to attend the first installment of our annual lecture series, on 16 November 2017 at 6.30pm.  Our lecture will be on "What does it mean to be a Socialist Lawyer?  A tribute to Michael Seifert."  The main speaker will be Michael Mansfield QC, and there will be time for questions and contributions from the floor.

AGM

The lecture will be followed by our Annual General Meeting.  The Annual General Meeting passes the policy of the Society, receives reports, and elects the Officers and Executive Committee.

Elections

The following positions will be open to election, and members are encouraged to stand:

  • President (honorary)
  • Vice Presidents (honorary)
  • Chair
  • Vice-Chair (2 positions)
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Membership Secretary
  • International Secretary
  • Socialist Lawyer Editor
  • Executive Committee Members (number of positions to be decided at the AGM)

The following positions may also be elected at the AGM from within the new Executive Committee, and members are encouraged to stand:

  • Assistant Secretary
  • Assistant Membership Secretary

Nominations for election, along with a manifesto of up to 100 words (statements longer than 100 words will be truncated) may be received any time up to 72 hours before the meeting (i.e. by 6:30 pm on Monday 13 November 2017).  Nominations may also be taken from the floor at the meeting, but these obviously will not be supported by a manifesto.

Motions

Motions may be proposed any time up to 72 hours before the meeting (i.e. by 6:30 pm on Monday 13 November 2017).  Emergency motions may be submitted from the floor at the meeting.

Free public lecture: Where next for the ICC?

On 26 April 2017 at 18:30 to 20:30 we will hold our next lecture in our Human Rights Lecture Series.

"Where next for the ICC?" will feature speakers:

  • Wayne Jordash QC (Doughty Street Chambers) and
  • Carla Ferstman (Redress)

The event will take place at the University of Law, 14 Store Street, London, WC1E 7DE.

No need to register; latecomers welcome.

Fighting trolls: Tackling online violence against women

Our next lecture, FIGHTING TROLLS: TACKLING ONLINE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN on 21 March 2017, will be addressed by speakers Dianne Abbott MP, and Olivia Piercy (Rights of Women).

Whitewashing Justice: Race and the Criminal Justice System

The Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers invites you to our free public lecture on Whitewashing Justice: Race and the Criminal Justice System. 

Speakers will be:

  • Leslie Thomas QC, leading silk from Garden Court Chambers
  • Marcia Rigg, sister of Sean Rigg who was killed by police.

Annual General Meeting and Elections

We also welcome all members to our AGM which will be held after the lecture. 

The AGM will debate the policy of the Society over the next year, and will elect the Officers and Executive Committee.

If you are interested in submitting motions for debate, or in standing for election, please contact secretary@haldane.org by 10 December 2016 at 6.30pm.  Alternatively, candidates for election who have not been nominated in advance can be nominated in person at the AGM.

The first lecture of our series will have speakers Jacob Bindman (Garden Court Chambers), Catherine Rose (Haldane Society Legal Observers), and Kevin Blowe (Netpol).

Our series' second lecture will feature speakers Joanne Cecil (Garden Court Chambers) and Gloria Morrison (JENGbA).

Should Socialists Vote In Or Out?

The Haldane Society invites you to join us for a discussion of the referendum on the UK's membership of the EU, from a socialist perspective.  Socialists have split on the issue, with some claiming that leaving will be a blow to austerity and neoliberalism, whilst others argue that it will simply harm those who are weakest in our society and take away hard-won rights.

We will be joined by speakers from both sides of the referendum debate and strongly encourage participation from the floor.

The event will take place on Thursday 9 June 2016 at 6pm-8.30pm at the School of Law, London Metropolitan University, 16 Gouldston Street, Aldgage, London E1 7TP.  All are welcome.  Latecomers are welcome to enter quietly.
