Tuesday 24th April: Haldane Society jointly with Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights:
Applying International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law regarding Palestine: Possibilities and Limitations.
Speaker: Professor Jeff Halper (Co-Founder and Director of Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions), Chair Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC.
Jeff Halper is the Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a Professor of Anthropology. As the Director of ICAHD, Jeff has forged a new mode of Israeli peace activity based on nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience to the Israeli Occupation authorities, forging a relationship of trust, solidarity and cooperation with Palestinian partner organizations.
In August 2008, Jeff was the only Israeli Jew to participate in the Free Gaza Movement when two boats sailed from Cyprus to Gaza, breaking the siege of over forty years. As a result he was awarded Palestinian citizenship and a Palestinian passport. In November 2011, Jeff testified before the Russell Tribunal on Palestine during its session in Cape Town, South Africa, in which he characterized the Israeli Occupation as apartheid -- and worse, warehousing.

Haldane Society Human Rights Lectures 2012
Wednesday 14th March 2012: "Occupy London and legal issues".
Michael Paget is a barrister at Garden Court Chambers, specialising in housing law. He was counsel in the St Paul's litigation: Corporation of London and Samede. He has also brought cases on the extent of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and acted for one of the Dale Farm residents prior to their eviction.
Paul Ridge is a partner at Bindmans LLP, one of the UK's leading human rights and civil liberties firms. The firm has a long history in the defence of the right to protest – dealing with amongst other recent challenges in policing around Stop the War, G20 and police kettling.
The firm acted for Brian Haw in defending his right to protest at Parliament Square and Paul Ridge has continued in this in the defence of Democracy Village and the current High Court challenge relating to protest at Parliament. He was the initial advisor to the St Paul’s Occupation and Occupy UBS.
George Barda has been a social justice campaigner for a decade, taking part in protests against many of the most egregious and all too normalized horrors of the day, from neo-imperial wars to global poverty to climate change, and has seen all those efforts at temporary and occasional protest have only the most limited impact. He says: "it was firm in this knowledge that I jumped at the chance to be involved in the Occupy movement which I see potentially as the lightning rod and umbrella that could help unify a too-fragmented resistance to the predations of a system of power highly coordinated by money. I was glad to be able to litigate in person in defence of the Occupy camp at St Paul's to be able to put the substance of the movement as I see it on record. The outcome of the initial trial was of course disappointing but largely predictable. The fight goes on..."
We apologise for the late change in speakers.
All lectures at 6.30pm, College of Law, 14 Store Street, London WC1E 7DE (Goodge St tube).
Free admission. No booking/reservation. £10 charge to practitioners requiring CPD points.
24th February 2012: Defending Human Rights Defenders Conference
Defending Human Rights Defenders conference, jointly organised by the Haldane Society, Amnesty International and European Lawyers for Democracy and Human Rights on 24 February 2012, was sold out. An audience of over 150 people heard lawyers, journalists and activists from seven different countries set out abuses meted out to human rights defenders in Belarus, Chechnya, Dagestan, Columbia, Turkey, Palestine and the Philippines. The conference discussed the importance of international solidarity, criminalisation and victimisation of human rights campaigners, censorship and media attacks, repression by non-state actors and marginalised and contested rights. Mike Mansfield QC and Jeremy Corbyn MP welcomed the human rights defenders and praised their courage.
The Haldane Society is committed to responding to calls for urgent solidarity action from our comrades defending human rights. We are working on a full report of the conference proceedings and will extend and continue this solidarity work.

“The Case for Legal Aid: an inquiry into public funding and access to justice”
Join us on Wednesday 2nd February 2011, 2pm – 5pm,
Houses of Parliament, Westminster, London SW1
Legal aid provides a crucial safety net to make sure that everyone can access justice. It provides a key service protecting the welfare and liberty of some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Even so, the Government has announced plans to make savage cuts. Our concern is that significant cuts to the legal aid budget will decimate the provision of publicly funded legal services across the country. We believe that if the legal aid budget is subject to extensive cuts the quality of our justice system will be totally undermined. Our interest in defending legal aid comes not from protecting lawyers’ interests, but because we see it as an intrinsic part of the welfare state and a necessary public service.
The Government’s Green Paper “Proposals for the Reform of Legal Aid in England and Wales” proposes drastic cuts from the legal aid budget:
• fewer people will be financially eligible for legal aid; anyone with equity in his or her home of more than £8,000 will be excluded, even those on benefit, and anyone with capital of £1,000 will have to pay a financial contribution;
• important areas of law will be excluded from the legal aid scheme: civil damages claims, divorce and private family law including issues involving contact with children (other than in cases involving domestic violence or international child abduction), clinical negligence, consumer protection, criminal injuries compensation, debt, disputes over education, employment cases, welfare benefits and immigration claims (excluding asylum);
• legal aid rates will be cut by 10% and frozen for five years – a significant pay cut when legal aid firms are already struggling.
A panel of inquiry – consisting of Dr Evan Harris, Canon Nicholas Sagovsky and Diana Holland, Assistant General Secretary Unite the Union – will receive testimony from users of legal aid services and those affected by the cuts. The panel will be assisted by Mike Mansfield QC.

"A fascinating insight into the mind of a man who has devoted his life to securing the liberty of others ...These memoirs benefit from a career spent at the heart of some of the most controversial criminal cases of the past four decades' -- New Statesman reviewing Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer.
"Interspersed with personal anecdotes and recollections, this insightful book is liberally laced with Michael's quirky brand of anarchic humour. Cases range from the Angry Brigade, the Bradford 12, the Birmingham Six, the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, Angela Cannings, Jill Dando, Ruth Ellis, Dodi Fayed, the 'Fertilizer' conspiracy, Iraqi hi-jackers, Stephen Lawrence, Fatmir Limaj (Leader of the Kosovan Liberation Army), the Marchioness Disaster, the Price sisters, the 'Ricin' trial, Risley prison riots, Tahira Tabassum, Judith Ward, Arthur Scargill and the miners to the Jean Charles de Menezes inquiry, and many more. Issues of public concern, human rights and innovative attempts to construct a democratic legal system are discussed in full, but Memoirs of a Radical Lawyer also unveils with honesty and wit a man who has put as much passion and energy into his life as his work, one of the great personalities of our time." - Publisher's description.
